What is the easiest way to get online in linux.


After spending so long trying to get my Speedtouch Modem to work and a long time before that my winmodem to work. I suddenly had the epiphany to ask the question the other way round.


What is the easiest way to conect to my adsl line in linux??!!!??

There must be some kind of solution out there which is automatically recognised by 90% of linux distro's

I am currently using Ubuntu linux which is amazing, if there were some way for me to go home tonight and plug my dsl line into something and that thing into my linux box and switch it on and it to be automatically recognised I would probably passs out with happiness.

Do any of you people who all seem to be very nice and a lot more knowledgable than me know a way?

I do have a budget of around £50 though!

if you have external adsl modem configured as bridged, then all you should neet to do is to plug the network cable and let os determine settings automagically (dynamic ip).

The easiest method is if your DSL modem has an ethernet connector. In the states most DSL connections use pppoe so all you need to do is use the MDK internet connection wizard and select DSL. Enter your username & password and away you go. Not sure with Ubuntu... You might need to download Roaring Penguin pppoe and go that route.

And 'what do you mean' or 'how do you' set a modem as 'bridged'?

Providing your NIC's up and running and supported, typically the most straightforward setup for adsl is to use an "ethernet" modem/router (no drivers needed) - you've then got a choice of assigning your networking information either "statically" or via DHCP - straightforward on most distributions - for modem/routers check out:

okay i have just bought a Addon MC8000UE-S4 Adsl Router and it is very snazzy with configuration done by browsing to the router and adjusting the settings - which I thought was very clever. However it doesn't seem to be working still.

Could it be to do with the settings that I have hashed around with to get my Speedtouch modem working?

Or do I just need to mess with the various ISP settings like 'Encapsulation' until I get the right ones?

The easiest way to connect to adsl with Ubuntu linux is to open a terminal and type:

sudo pppoeconf
(then your password of course)

This will open the pppoe configuration which will guide you through. It's pretty self explanatory and on most of the screens just hit Enter. Except your user name and password. Easy peasy. Once this is done, it's done. If you find you are not connected, just open a terminal and type:
sudo pon dsl-provider
That's it. I don't know an easier way with Ubuntu.
