Upgrading 1 distro to another is very bad idea.

It depends - usually it's worse idea to live with old operating system and old software.
What does
Code:
sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
show? Or use eth1 instead of wlan0 if it's that..the name might vary.
If it prints out information about networks nearby, such as ESSIDs, the card and driver are co-operating just fine. If it says device doesn't support scanning, try the other name, and if none of the device names work, the driver is not working. If it says just nothing, there's something else wrong -- possibly something with driver. Sometimes when my laptop's battery runs out and the system powers off because of that (before it's safely turned off), the wireless card does just that -- seems to work but shows no networks -- for a while without any apparent reason. The card is a Broadcom bcm4318, using b43 kernel module, and working fine except for that..usually a reboot and some waiting does the trick, whatever the trick is in the end (I still haven't figured out what the waiting does...)
