I have Mandrake 10 installed on my PC using Gnome and I use a usb key drive to swap data from PC to PC. On my Linux PC, when I unplug the key, the "memory key" icon disappears from the desktop. When I plug it back in, the icon does not reappear nor is the device in the mnt directory. However, usbview will show the device in its list. Is there a command I can type into the console to refresh the usb devices, so the icon will appear on the desktop? The only solution so far is rebooting the PC. It can be a bit cumbersome and absurd to restart the PC EVERY time I plug in my usb key.

I got this bash script to rescan the SCSI bus, and it might be able to be tweaked to suit your needs:
