64-bit install very slow, both Linux and Windows

Hello all,

Recently I tried to install Ubuntu 64-bit 8.04. Everything went VERY slowly, I mean 10 minutes to open up a screen and, after about 5 hours of installing, I gave up. I also tried installing Windows Vista 64-bit, and everything behaved the same way.

With this problem present in both Vista and Linux's installation, this leads me to wonder if maybe it is a hardware problem. I have my hardware listed off at the bottom. Do yall think that maybe it is the motherboard's chipset that is to blame?

Thanks in advance!

As usual, try eliminating the obvious first.
Is it a new machine - how does a 32-bit run ???. How does the liveCD run ???. Have you memtest'd it - minimum overnight, longer is better.
Check the BIOS for options.

I actually left out an important detail. The CD drive will only spin up for a few seconds, spin down, and repeat. I've tried the Ubuntu CD in another CD drive on my computer, with the same problem. I put the same Ubuntu CD in my laptop, and it worked just fine.

I already have Ubuntu x86 installed, and it works just fine. I've had in the past Slackware 12.0 installed, and it too did not have any problems. It is not a new machine; I've had the computer since April 2007.

I ran memtest86+ v2.01 and it did not show any errors. I did not see any obvious options in the BIOS that would help me out, but there are a lot of advanced options. I haven't touched any of those settings, I've left it at default.

I just got the Ubuntu 8.10 x64 CD, and I'm about to try it out.

Thanks,

Check the boot options.

Check to see if Ubuntu has a boot option to enable for systems with 4gb ram. Remember seeing a post on another site with the exact same problem. I think he removed a memory chip then recompiled the kernel with himem support for 4 gigs of ram after the install.

Oddly enough I had a problem installing vista 64 with 4 gigs of ram but it installed fine with 2 and runs fine with 4. Only guess is winblows downloaded an update that fixed the problem during install.

What is I say its your CD ROM which is slow.. not your system..

same happened with me ...

it took about 3 hours to install F9 with below configuration ..

2.0 GHz @ 2 processor..
Intel mother board.
1 GB DDR
80 GB Sda drive
LG DVD RW

It took about 30 mins on my friends computer to install with i my self performed..

2.2 GHz @ 2 processors
Intel mother board
1 GB DDR
80 GB sda
Sumsung DVD RW

i think it depends on DVD R/W .. how much sharp its lens is....

Though my DVD was a new one.. i don't know if i am right or not..

Cheers!!!

Is there some law like Murphy's law where something will not work until you mention it or try to show it? It installed without a single hitch this time round. It seems like it waits for me to ask someone for it to disappear lol.

That's very interesting that it can install fine on 2GB RAM but not 4GB, I'll take out 2GB and give it another try.

Thanks for all the help!
