I've actually been unable to discover that at all - and I'm still having trouble getting xmodmap to run with each new X session (i.e. I have to manually run it whenever I restart my computer). If anyone can help, it seems like you'll have a lot of fans....

well, you can resolve the manual command run by adding the line to .xinitrc or into /xinit-d/mouse-buttons.

i'm still wondering why this would work find in KDE, but not at all in gnome.

There is no such file as /xinit-d/mouse-buttons, nor a directory called /xinit-d, at least on my system (RH9.0)

I'm wondering how to configure the mouse side buttons to forward and back in a browser? After doing what was said that is.

i think imwheel takes care of that.

@teyesahr: my apologies. that is the setup that i have on my system. you could also try any autostart options in your desktop (if you use something like KDE or gnome) maybe?

i'm a newbie, and i'm running mandrake 9.1. i edited my xf86config file, as stated in previous posts, and when i restart my computer, linux wouldn't boot up in a graphical mode at all. i was stuck in text. i rolled back the xf86 config file and was able to reboot properly.

I'm using the ms trackball explorer (usb) and mdk 9.1, like i said. any help would be greatly appreciated. i've been searching these boards for the past twenty minutes to a half hour, with little success. my goal would be to get all five buttons + scroll working. to remap buttons 2,3, and 4, so that 2 is "back", 3 is right-click, and 4 is "forward." again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hah, I finally figured out how to get xmodmap to run with each new session. For individual users, put the code 'xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5"' in your .bashrc file (in /home/'user'). There's also a global bash file, so it'll run that for everyone (/etc/bashrc, or /etc/profile, depending on what it is you're trying to do).

PS: Those values - 1 2 3 6 7 4 5 - are specific to my computer. They may not working for everyone.

... what exactly do you mean by console?

If you are in X (GUI), move your mouse over the lower left corner, click on 'start', and (usually) you will see 'terminals', then, click on 'rxvt' or 'xterm'. This will open a 'terminal' window, otherwise known as a 'console window'. Click the mouse on the window, you will now see a blinking 'cursor', then follow the instructions,
type su and then input the password.

All this is mute though, as nothing is going to get your side mouse buttons to work in X, as they have not standardized the 'applications' to understand what is meant by 'back' and 'forward' concerning the browser. One might work, but the others won't.

The reason I say this, is everytime someone posts this request on the internet (anywhere), there is a stream of lines about imwheel, and xmod, etc, but no one every finds out how to make the side buttons on the mouse go 'back' and 'forward' in a web browser, which is what WE all want.

Of course, after this post, I might get flamed, and posers will say, I got it working, but ahah, you will never get them to post the instructions on HOW to do it. So, as of 2003, the 21st Century on this forsaken planet, I can't get my side buttons to work either, unless I'm in win2k.
However, I still love my linux, so don't get me wrong about that.

faheyd is right, I think. I've fiddled XF86config and xmodmap so that buttons 6 & 7 show up in xev. So what? I can't map them in xmodmap because XKeysymDB only defines 5 buttons from what I can see. I've tried imwheel-0.9.5-720 (SuSE rpm) but it doesn't support the -b switch that I keep hearing so much about. As such, I can only use the wheel. I tried compiling imwheel-1.0.0pre5 but it didn't work (I'm a newb).

Sorry to dig up old thread.

I've tried to put the "xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5"" in my .bashrc, but it doesn't work. I have to manually execute that command in order for the mouse wheel to work properly, though, the forward and back buttton still do not work.

If I put the command in .xsession which doesn't exist, I couldn' teven start X.

So what should I do to make the mapping work right?

I changed Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" to Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"
I added Option "Buttons" "7"

Than i restarted X server.

I ran xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5

This sucessfully added my buttons.

I ran imwheel, to get the below error.
INFO: imwheel started (pid=24789)
/home/calvin/.imwheelrc: No such file or directory

So i created the folder, then ran imwheel again.
I know imwheel is running, because there is a PID, _AND_ when i scroll using mouse wheel, it is fast than before. Yet how does this help me use buttons 6 and 7 for forward and back buttons in my browser!?

"So i created the folder, then ran imwheel again", I think you were supposed to create a 'file', which is '.imwheelrc' and not a 'folder'. So, just remove 'rmdir' the 'folder', and 'touch /home/calvin/.imwheelrc' and then, restart imwheel and you should be OK. But to your question about 'how' this imwheel thing is supposed to help you use the 'back' and 'fwd' buttons, see my previous posts about it. However, I think that some browsers will recognize the 'back' and 'fwd' clicks of the mouse. Go forth and investigate. Also, there is another 'thread' on this subject with alot of replies, check it out.
