I assume you are talking about X and not the console.

For X:

Edit your /etc/X11/XFconfig.

Look for the following section:

Section "Screen"
DefaultDepth 16

If the DefaultDepth <number> isn't there, make it. Change 16 into 32.

Below it there should be entries like this:

SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection

One for every depth mode.

Make the one for 32 if it isn't there. Modes must have a valid resolution.

If you are talking about the console: Sorry, can't help you.

According to the XF86Config manual page, 32 bit is not a valid depth. There's no particular reason to use 32-bit anyway; on most hardware, it's exactly the same as 24-bit.

Adding what wapcaplet said. 32-bit is 24-bit color and with an addition of 8-bit transparencies.

24-bit color + 8-bit shades of transparencies = 32 bit

The equation is true for all OS.

If have used ATI's Multmedia Center. You can view a TV channel on the desktop with about 70% opaque and still see 100% of a web site or use other programs. This only works if you have 32-bit depth mode enabled. I don't know if X Window Server has a command to use the 32-bit depth.

Sometimes the extra 8 bits is just there for padding to make the memory align to the 16-bit word boundary.
