According to the XF86Config manual page, 32 bit is not a valid depth. There's no particular reason to use 32-bit anyway; on most hardware, it's exactly the same as 24-bit.
Adding what wapcaplet said. 32-bit is 24-bit color and with an addition of 8-bit transparencies.
24-bit color + 8-bit shades of transparencies = 32 bit
The equation is true for all OS.
If have used ATI's Multmedia Center. You can view a TV channel on the desktop with about 70% opaque and still see 100% of a web site or use other programs. This only works if you have 32-bit depth mode enabled. I don't know if X Window Server has a command to use the 32-bit depth.
