I'm having a problem getting Xwindows programs from another host to display on my Linux machine.
Here's the procedure I use:
1) run "xhost +" to open access from other hosts.
2) telnet to other machine.
3) set display to my Linux machine with "export DISPLAY=linux1:0.0".
4) run "xclock" to verify, and that seems to work fine.
5) then try other programs (xterm for example).
I keep getting the message "Error: Can't open display: linux1:0.0"
I don't understand why xclock works great but everything else I try bombs.
I even went so far as to try using "X -query otherhost :1" to run an X session off of the other host, then setting my display to same as above except ":1.0", but I get exactly the same results. The funny thing is, the X session works fine... it's actually talking to Xwindows on my linux box, but as soon as I try to run xterm, I get the same error.
I never used to have this problem under earlier versions of Mandrake, but ever since I upgraded to 7.2 (and now 8.1), this happens to me.
Someone please help me. Red Hat Linux 7.0 wont find my video crad. I have a Winfast Geforce 2 MX. does anybody know who to get red hat linux 7.0 working with this card. it just wont have nothing to do with it when I install linux. please help me
I did some more testing and what I found was it only happens with certain X apps on certain hosts. For example, on one of our hp-ux hosts, xterm displays perfectly on my Linux box, but on another hp-ux host, it does not. The odd thing is some X apps work fine on all hosts (like hp's dtterm, and xclock).
BTW, if I go to an hp-ux workstation and try this experiment, everything works great, so it appears to be a problem with my Linux machine.
Could this be some funky XFree86 compatibility problem?
