Xwindow

I have set the init level as 5 in /etc/inittab.
When the GUI has started,if i try to go the text terminal
with the keys alt+ctrl+F1 or alt+ctrl+any key from fl to f8
the system hangs with blank screen. I have pentium III 933Mhz with 128Mb DDR and have Red Hat Linux 7.0 running
kernel 2.2.18.

I think it is because you don't have the previous run level.
(You got into Xwindow directly from booting. So, no previous run level!!!)
With init run level set as 3 (not 5),and getting into Xwindow by "startx" after login, then it will work!
Thanks.

limyh115, wrong. Sorry, that's not how it works.

What's probably happened is that the 6 terminals usually found at Ctrl+Alt+F1-F8 arent being started. Maybe you altered their settings in /etc/inittab too, that's where they are. Check you have:
Quote:
# Run gettys in standard runlevels
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1
2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
3:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3
4:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty4
5:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty5
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6
