xscreensaver - recovering from standby

I am using a laptop running Mandarke 9 w/ GNOME. How do I get back the desktop after xscreensaver puts the system into standby/suspend? The screen gets turned off and I can't get it back by moving the mouse, pressing keys or the OFF/ON button.

Thanks,

Rabin
