XMMS .mp3 Association Won't "Stick" in KDE

I changed KDE's file association for x-mp3 to open with XMMS by default but it is still opening up with xine, the next down on the list.

The association stays in the list until I log out and then it is gone, but either way it won't open with XMMS. xine and kaffiene always stay and work fine.

I tried removing and re-adding the x-mp3 type but it didn't help. I read on here that some other mime type may have hijacked it but my mpeg3 and x-mpeg3 are empty though they say Netscape Kaffeine Starter Plugin in the description.

This is on my brother's computer running Debian sarge with kernel 2.4.26-1 and KDE 3.2.3. I have the same setup on my own computer and XMMS stays in the file association just fine.

I don't know what to troubleshoot next, any ideas?

summary: change association, won't open in chosen application, log out or reboot and association disappears off the list, repeat.

Thanks,
Corey

Steps:
  • Right click on any MP3 file in your file manager.
  • Choose "Open with..." command.
  • Type the name 'xmms' in the field which asks for which command to execute.
  • Press OK. The message "System configuration updated" or something similar should appear for a few seconds.
  • Now double-click the file. See if it opens in xmms. If it does not then right-click the file and choose "Open With..." The 'Open With' menu will now be having sub-items (file types can be associated with any number of applications/viewers). Choose the appropriate one to open the file.
Seems to work file on my machine with KDE 3.2.
