X11 terminals not working as single-user

Hi, I thined up my kernel a bit by removing options I did not use. I know this issue is about something missing in the kernel because I still have my other kernel working fine. Here is whats the issue: When I open gnome-terminal as a single user the cursor stays at the begining wthout even showing $. With other X11 terminals like aterm, xterm and kterm, the window opens and shuts itself withing a fraction of a second. When I open it as root user in the mandrake control panel, aterm works just fine.
Any clue?
JP

Did you switch over to devfs?

It could be a permission problem on
/dev/pt*

Cheers,
Tink

I did not make changes to devfs. It should be working the same way for my 2.6.2 kernel than my thined up 2.6.3-rc2 anyway, right? When I boot up on the 2.6.3-rc2 the hardware probing software of mandrake tells me that sda and sdb has been removed(sda beeing my hd and sdb a usb storage device). But I can see all my partitions anyway... I changed the permisions for all the pt* devices and the terminal do the same as before.
Thanks
JP

I just tried the same configuration with the 2.6.2 kernel and it works just fine. I guess it was only an issue with the 2.6.3-rc2. Thanks for the help
