Unhappy X-Windows fails on boot, unless using failsafe

I have an unusual problem when booting into Linux. I am running Mandrake 8.2 (Final) on a Dell Dimension 8200 w/ NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti.

My problem is that the boot hangs just before starting X-Windows. If I hit the Return key it prompts me to login - which works, but then leaves me in the text environment. If I type in "startx" it bombs with some error about not being able to initialize.

So far the workaround is booting from GRUB into the "failsafe" option and then selecting to boot into "Graphic Mode" from there. And all works well. I just am getting tired of the extra steps.

I would be more than happy to post any logs or error reports if someone would be kind enough to let me know where to find them. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Thanks,

Sounds like X config prob to me. Please post /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 here.

Or you could try an even easier distro: http://www.lycoris.com/ I love it. It took less time to configure. It works and looks just like XP. Did I say it's free? CD1 is all you need.

One question, if there is something wrong with this file, wouldn't it cause a problem when I logon through failsafe? Or is this file only accessed when booting normally?

Could you tell us what the error message is and what is in your .wmrc file?

It took me a bit to figure out how to get the error log - actually showing the error. I realized that after I get in through failsafe, it overwrites the log with the error in it. Finially figured out to just cp it to another directory and then log in with failsafe.

So here is what the log looks like when it fails:

Looks to me like a problem with the X server for that Geforce3, but that's just a guess. Is there a more recent one you can get your hands on?

The problem with that theory is that it would then effect me no matter how I booted into Linux. The relevant issue is that my setup does work, just not the way it is supposed to. I'm just trying to figure out why I can't boot directly into X-Windows. We know for a fact that it works, there is just something wrong with the normal boot process.

Check the revision numbers for your NVIDIA "glx" module and the "nvidia" module that follows it. All of the other modules report that they were compiled for "4.2.0" but these two NVIDIA modules report "4.0.2" and it's just possible that this could be the problem. I don't know enough details of the failsafe operation to know whether it can ignore such version mismatches or not, but if it can that would explain why it works when a normal boot does not. Looks as if you need some newer NVIDIA drivers...

Hmm..., if that's the problem, I'm screwed for the time being. I already have the most current NVIDIA drivers installed from off of their site.

Thanks for all of the help guys, and if anyone else has any further insight, I'd love to hear it!

That's a pretty common error. There are a couple different reasons you can get it. Example, the kernel header files aren't there or being found...Go to www.nvidia.com then to linux drivers then on the left the nvidia forum. There are alot of posts exactly like this one that should shed some like on the NV kernel problem.

Well, it's a moot issue now. I got brave and tried to install the KDE 3 beta on my system and effectively disabled all KDE apps.

So I reinstalled Mandrake 8.2 this morning, rebuilt the NVIDIA drivers from source and now it works fine. Something must have happened with the last install that threw everyhting off.

Anyway, thanks for all the assistance everyone!

Since I'm abit curious about this...

Have you ever got the Nvidia drivers to work???

If soo when it stopped working have you recompiled the kernel???

If you have done that you have to enter init 3 and make a new installation of the Nvidia drivers...

That's my 2 cents
