Angry X Files

Hello all,
I have a new question regarding X. I finally found my vertical refresh rates, horizontal sync, and compatible video card settings, but nevertheless, I still can't get X to work. Here's my question: if I type in something such as '/usr/X11R6/etc/X11' (as root) should I be able to access that or should it come up as "Permission denied"?
Also, someone from the NewbieXFree86 mailing list suggested that I "check existence permission." How could I go about doing that?

Lastly, does any of this make any sense?
Matlin
(I've spent so many hours trying to get this to work I don't want to give up now!)

root is like god in linux, you should be able to do everything as root by default.
check existence permission, i presume they mean check the permission of a file or files.. you can use the ls -al command to list a more detailed list of files with permission settings in a directory.

"/usr/X11R6/etc/X11" is a directory so if you were to type "cd /usr/X11R6/etc/X11" you'd change to that directory, then you could do "ls -al" to get a detailed listing of the contents of that directory.

just type startx

permission denied in roots case means you are trying to execute something that is not executable

could be because it needs to be executable which you can do as root or as some user with permission by using

chmod +x filename

but not all files should be executed, some are config files and other types of files.

to get x running use Xconfigurator
