X

I've got ML8.1 installed and it's been running for a couple of days now. One of the biggest things that bothers me is the display within programs of fonts. All the web browsers I've tried (and I'm not talking about lynx and friends) have really crappy fonts and look quite horrible - there are other programs also.
I'm sure (although I'd have to double check) that I've set anti-aliasing on to help smooth them, but doesn't seem to work.
Again, not all programs are bad, off the top of my head things like LinuxConf, Mandrake Control Center etc are OK. Anyone got any idea why this might occur and how to fix it if possible.

Another thing that's pretty horrible is when I shade windows. The whole thing jerks down and up the screen with big black bits, rather than being either really smooth, or invisible. Back on the browser front, when I scroll down a screen, it is really jerky and you can actually see the page move up a line, rather than being smooth. I'm using WindowMaker at the moment. I know X sits on linux, but surely it can't be this poor?
My notebook has plenty of guts, so it's not a resource problem either.

Thanks

Believe it or not, there's actually a Font Deuglification HOWTO. Who'd have thunk?

As for the video issues, a little more system info would help (laptop model/display type,
version of XFree86, resolution settings, etc.).

Ok, laptop
P3 1Ghz,
512Mb RAM
64Mb Video card
30 Gig HDD
1024 resolution

As for Xfree86, don't know how to find out.
I've just installed Mandrake 8.1 last week, so I'm new and don't know commands to find out.

Code:
XFree86 -version
will...well, that's pretty self-referential

The exact makes / models are kind of important here, because we'll first need to determine
if Linux is detecting your graphics hardware correctly or not, and if there are any known issues with your particular setup. If you could post the contents of your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file it would be helpful as well.

Also- here's a link to a mind-boggling range of information regarding Linux and laptops. Check it out...

OK, pretty much what I've done is downloaded true type fonts. Can't remember where from now, but it was from a link on here. I've set most the browser text etc to Verdana and it's a bit better.
