It would help if you specify the error message you receive when trying to run for example "gaim".

Write "gaim" in the terminal and then post the message here.

seb@Sn3bb3R:~> gaim

Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkstyle.c: line 341 (gtk_style_copy): assertion `style != NULL' failed.
Gaim has segfaulted and attempted to dump a core file.
This is a bug in the software and has happened through

It is possible that this bug is already fixed in CVS.
You can get a tarball of CVS from the Gaim website, at
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/gaim-CVS.tar.gz.

If you are already using CVS, or can reproduce the crash
using the CVS version, please notify the gaim maintainers
by reporting a bug at

Please make sure to specify what you were doing at the time,
and post the backtrace from the core file. If you do not know
how to get the backtrace, please get instructions at

assistance, please IM either RobFlynn or SeanEgn and
they can help you.

Have you checked that you have the latest version?

errrr.... not really, I just went on the web site and click on "download", and it was the one at the top of the list.

Anyway, it's just that it works fine when I'm logged as root, this is what I don't understand... Isn't there a way I can give my user login the writes for that?

Sorry I forgot to say that it does load up the app, but when I want to login and it checks the password it gives the error message.

When looking at the error you receive it seems there is no write-permission error. As it says in the error message it's actually a bug.

I actually download the source myself, compiled it and ran it and it seemed to work for me...

I just downloaded the file:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/g...-0.59.5.tar.gz

Uncompressed it:
tar xzvf gaim-0.59.5.tar.gz

Entered the created directory (cd gaim-XXXXXX).
The executed the following commands:
./configure
make
cd src
./gaim
