Would this work?


would it work if i copyed the kernel from my mandrake install to my slackware install? if it would could yo utell me what i need to copy? thanks! they are on the same system just different times i have formated.

chances are 90 to 10 that it will not work. A better option will be to copy the .Config file from one system to other and recompile the kernale using
#make dep
#make bzImage
#make modules
#make install_modules

and then copy the arch/i386/boot/bzImage from /usr/src/linux-2.4 and use it you have more chances of a surviving system

It's make modules_install NOT make install_modules, just to clear up any confusion.

Well the way linux is set up is so that the kernel is sperated from the rest in such a way that you CAN run the same kernel for different distributions.
If you have a kernel with everything specific to your hardware directly built into the kernel then it's very easy. All you have to do is get it to boot the kernel and select a different root partition for each distribution.
With modules it's a little more difficult. You have to make sure each distribution can access the same /lib/modules. The easiest would probably be to make a copy for each distribution. You will have to remember to do this every time you recompile the kernel otherwise one of the distributions won't be able to load several modules.
