Windows 8, after installation, removed my grub menu, How to I get back to Fedora 18?
Hello. I just installed Windows 8. I want to change to my other OS Fedora 18. My grub menu does not show up when I restart anymore. I boot directly into Windows 8. How do I get into Fedora 18?
I checked to see if my Fedora 18 partition deleted. It is still there. Searching on bing, reinserting the Fedora 18 boot cd was mentioned a lot but I do not have it. I do have blank cds though. They are 700mb cd-r.
This is the primary reason why it is always a good idea to keep the installation medium when you install a system. Of course, if you borrowed it from someone, that's another story. You should always try to use the same distribution medium you used to install and not use a different distributions system to install as there may be some differences in the bootloader. Your best bet would be to get another Fedora iso installed to a CD. If you can't do that for some reason, you should make sure you get something with Grub2 which Fedora uses. You might also try downloading EasyBCD and installing it as third party software on windows and use it to boot Fedora.
Just repeat the grub-install process. You'll need to be able to boot from a DVD to do that. Windows (naturally) rewrote the MBR to point to its loader. There's lots of documentation on the web about exactly how to do this: read it carefully. First.
What made me able to access Fedora 18 was EasyBCD. I downloaded and then installed it. I opened it and added Fedora 18 to the list of operating systems, which only had Windows 8. Then I set Fedora 18 as the default OS to boot. After I restarted my laptop one page came up for me to choose between Windows 8 or Fedora 18. I chose Fedora 18 and it brought me to my GRUB menu where I chose to run Fedora 18 again.
I also downloaded SystemRescueCD but since I tried EasyBCD first and it worked I didn't try SystemRescueCD. I also tried downloading an iso file off of Fedora's website but I didn't know which one to download and the one I ended up downloading was too big for my CD. GlennsPref - I recognized, at the link you gave, that all the iso files were of different desktops. I use GNOME and the GNOME desktop iso file was too big for my cds. So I figured I'd try other suggestions before downloading the smaller iso files, which were of different desktops, and reinstalling GRUB off of them. I thought I might run into problems.
The main reason I wrote this response is to be helpful to other people searching for help with a similar problem.
Thank you all for your suggestions. It was really nice of you. And thank you for helping me gain access to Fedora 18 again. Thank you all for your help.
