Will it be 2.6.x or 3.0.x ??

The question has been asked by programmer Jeff Garzik, will the next stable kernel release be named 2.6.x or 3.0.x . Read the kernel mailing list starting with Jeff's question here

What do you poeple think ?

Well tricky in the related thread about this a while back, Fin said that the major releases (1.0; 2.0 etc) had reached a "landmark" or had something very big that was improved on. Since I really don't see alot of huge improvements (except maybe firewire) in the 2.5.x series, I don't think it'll be 3.0. Unless there is something else there that I didn't notice that was a huge improvement, like support for flying saucers or something

So my guess is 2.6 but I really have no idea, that's just my semi educated guess.

Cool

yeah, I probably agree with what MasterC says. Some nice advancement was done in firewire and USB. But I don't know if that is enough to do it. I think 3.0 should be out when full support for 3dfx is embedded for most 3d cards, and DVD playback is also embedded, and support for like 1000000000000000 smp cpus is available,

I really don't know a whole lot about the kernel numbering procedure, but I recall that somewhere I read that the kernel had to follow a strict numbering pattern (this is not verbatim it's from memory) but as masterC stated unless there is a landmark change then it will have to be 2.6. Right? This is just my opinion on the subject but I believe it will be 2.6 also.

Old thread revieved with a little update, I am holding December isssue of Linux Magazine and it happened to have an interview with that dude, the one who is behind the wheel, ahh, what's his name ... ah yeah, Linus Torvalds, so it seems like we are going to have ourselves 2.6 as the next version turnover rather than 3.0.
The feature date was set for Halloween, hehe, it is almost Thanks Giving though.

well, basically usual rant, more and better device drivers on desktop front and improved SMP and async I/O on a server side as well more work on PT thread-compatible layer, and such.

Don't forget there will also be support for winmodems. Or that is what I read. Also I agree 2.6 would be different than the numbering scheme. Well I guess Redhat did it with 7.3 so who knows.

Well basically, they set freeze feature date to Halloween, it will take at least 6 month to claim it fully stable release.
