Why when editing files does Linux create a duplicate file with a ~ in the extension?

Whenever I edit or create files, Redhat 9.0 creates another files of the same name but with a ~ in the extension, i.e., Mary.sce becomes Mary.sce~. This creates many problems and I would like to turn off this feature. Can anyone give me any ideas on how to stop this?

Thanks!

Its a backup file the text editor creates. It is a function of the editor so which one are you using?

These are backup files created by applications. You can turn off this feature in the preferences menu of individual applications.

I hadn't realised fancypiper had answered your question, serves me right for opening too many tabs at the same time.
