why oh why can't ogg123 output to jackd?

Hi

I am no friend of proprietary formats and closed stuff. So I chose .ogg as format for the audio files for the program that I am writing. Now I find that ogg123 is unfortunately less functional than mpg123 (for playing mp3s).

And since I rely totally on jackd sound server, ogg123 surprises me of not having a jack pluging. Before you start recommending I use ALSA: ALSA does not provide the functionality I need. ALSA has no logging whatsoever so troubleshooting is almost impossible, except restarting it (which is the only thing you can really do). Also I need the patchbay functionality of Jack.

Now, after having fiddled around with the silliest of things like trying to get ogg123 use the oss output and use oss2jack to run it into jack, or using alsa2jack, which also does not work, as well as trying to get artsd -a jack to run and use the artsd output module of ogg123, I am short of giving up.
Do I really really have to convert my .ogg files back to mp3 and turn my back on a format that I really really wanted to use?
Or do I just not see it? I mean, ogg123 supports every conceivable other format, why not jack?

Unfortunately, I am no programmer, so I can't write it myself. I have checked out python-ogg (my program is written in python), but there is no documentation about it that I can find.

Why do you need to use ogg123? There are plenty of other cli audio players out there that can handle multiple formats. How about mplayer or ffplay(ffmpeg)?

Thanks for that! I was so stuck on the problem that I did not for alternatives anymore, sometimes you can really lose the perspective.

looks like ffplay does not have a jack output plugin, but mplayer surely does. It surely is not lightweight, but it does the trick and now the program works.

thanks again
