Why loop and vcs device has same Major Number 7?

As I read in kernel documentation devices.txt, Major number 7 is assigned both for loop and vcs.

And as I read Linux-kernel-programming-guide, same Major davice means those device are controlled by the same driver.

But i don't think loop and vcs is controlled by the same driver. The source is separated.

So why this happened? how can the kernel distinguish the 7 for loop and the 7 for vcs?

-----------------------

I'm really sorry if this question is troublesome, but I have tried search google.

Thank you very much

Umm, probably the minor number, each device has both a major, and minor number. And the numbering system is old and outdated (yet sadly, not replaced), so the numbers are all arbitrary and make no since at all if you try to find any logic in them.
