which version should I use?

I have a compaq contura 4/25c laptop with about 8MB of RAM and about 80-85MB of hard disk. I was thinking of installing an early version of slackware linux (3.4-3.5). My question is whether such early versions allow me to run a text editor like micro emacs.
Since I am an absolute beginer with linux I would apreciate any comments about what the best possible linux version I might use taking into account my ram/disk space limitations.
thanks

Yes, you can run emacs under early versions of slack. But you can think about a new one (even 8.1), it's possible to install it (without GUI).

I'm not sure about any other versions of slackware, but I installed slackware 7.1 using about 25 floppies. Try looking at http://www.linux-laptop.net/
