Where is all my memory

I have 2G Ram.

If I run top or free it tells me I have 906008.

Where has half my memory gone?

I do not know if this is relevant but according to the mem command on the Windows XP command line I have

104876 bytes total contiguous extended memory

941056 bytes available XMS memory

The Windows XP control Panel/System reports 2.0 GB of RAM

All your RAM are belong to us.

You'll need to recompile your kernel with a different himem option, either that or install a different kernel that supports more memory if Slackware has one available.

Question

I have had a look and high memory was off. I will try 4G and see if that makes a difference.

A couple of questions.
The help in menuconfig talks about 32 bit processors but I have 64 bit (and configured for Athlon AMD 64 in the kernel)

I have noticed the option of symmetric multi processing support. Should I enable that for an Athlon 64?

Well, do you have one or two+ processors? It won't hurt you to enable it if you only have one CPU, but it won't help you either.

Its an Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core

Does that mean dual processor?

Well I just tried it and I got as far as the command prompt but then no keyboard. Perhaps I need to recompile the modules

Yes, I believe you should enable that symetric multiprocessor bit.

Note that "Athlon 64" is a generic term that does not imply the number of cores. But that "X2 Dual Core" designation on the end is what differentiates in your case. Most people would probably assume a simple statement like "Athlon 64" was referring to a single core processor.

Thumbs up

Thanks for your help.

Now running with symmetric-multi-processing and top/free showing 2G memory.
