What script tells the X server to use the XF86Config file?

I have a few XF86Config files, one called XF86Config, another XF86Config-4, and so on. Right now it's using XF86Config-4. I'm just interested in what script tells X to use this file, and know that I can change it if I need to.

See
man xdm
This may be invoked from the /etc/inittab level 5 settings.

This may be done indirectly through preferred and then through gdm/xdm/kdm
All the dms can get the config file spec:
e.g. from man xdm
NAME
xdm - X Display Manager with support for XDMCP, host chooser

SYNOPSIS
xdm [ -config configuration_file ] [ -nodaemon ] [ -debug debug_level ]
[ -error error_log_file ] [ -resources resource_file ] [ -server
server_entry ] [ -session session_program ]
