what is an invalid shell?

What does one mean when they say an invalid shell? My FTP server would only allow aliasing anonymous to a user with an 'invalid shell'.

Thanks,

Dana

It means a shell that doesn't actually exist. By default most people with use:
/bin/bash
or
/bin/sh

Invalid shell could also mean a shell that's not listed in /etc/shells.

...or an inert shell, an application or device that doesn't allow for interaction, like /bin/false or /dev/null
