what does it means??


hi,

recently i have a machine. i just wondering when i prompts "uname -r"
then, it replies.
2.4.21-4-ELsmp
what is smp stands for?

smp = symmetric multi processor (or was it processing, something like that)

i think thats what it stand for, unless they are using smp to mean something else....

SciYro is right: it's symmetric multiprocessing.

Translation: your kernel is configured to use more than one processor. Either you have two (or more) processors in your system, or you have a processor with "hyperthreading" capability. Hyperthreading is an attempt to make the system a little more efficient by "fooling" the system into thinking there is more than one processor available.
