Well, what i really want to learn more then compile the kernal, is being able to use the console and such, able to config files and such via the console, i goal is to get into debian and slackware, and i heard those don't have GUI confige tools.

So what should i learn to be able to run a non-gui based linux flavor?

Just install Slack and take things as they come to you.

But i have problems installing slackware

Tried debian, i really like how it installed, but couldn't get KDE to start

I want to start in a GUI, and use the console to do most of my things..

But still, what's the best way to learn, i have two linux books, i'll start reading, any other tips?
