Hi all
Sooo, since "them-lot" bought skype, I'm not really prone to use it. There are some web based VOIPs out there, any of them good? I'd use Linphone, but I dont know if skype and LinPhone can connect...the site I'd like to use to learn Japanese uses skype...hence...
Thanks
Thor
I have in the past used Ekiga, but it's been a while. It worked okay once I got it set up, but the set-up was a bit convoluted, at least several years ago when I did it.
As far as I am aware, the protocols used by the various VOIP providers are not interchangeable. If the Japanese group that you want to connect to uses The Borg Skype, so must you.
The best VOIP tools for secure communication establish a direct, point-to-point, enciphered tunnel between two IPs.
I know of at least one major company that has a "chat" app (for mobile devices and desktop units) which routes communications (only) over its internal company network. The "road warriors" connect to that network via VPN, and that's how the messages are secured.
Hmm, there is a notion (at least in Japan) to primarily use skype, but, since microsoft got its hands on it, I doubt the Linux version to be as up to date as "required"...that is my main concern...for the Linux version to become the unwanted stepchild...
I had Ekiga too, never really connected to anyone (way in the beginning of my Linux years, when I installed almost anything and everything I could find in the repo)
Hmm, the security is not really THE concern, though it'd be nice to knwo it's safe to talk freely... hehe but...congrats on the "aquisition" jefro
An Ooma box...hmm...for the few times I even use a phone. We in the family mainly text... LOL

Shouldn't it be a half and half deal? You should learn Japanese and they English/or what ever you speak.
...hmm, what a clever notion...if we could spread this like peanutbutter over the world, would'nt we find peace? You're right...they like English, me..Japanese...maybe we should cut the cake in half...
Japanese are interesting people...the world can learn a great deal from them

I know a lot of people will balk at this since many think Google is worse than Small and Flaccid, but GMail's GChat is basically a clone of Skype, even down to the UI and icons, with a few actually nice additions and of course it works in Linux. It might be because of their massive server farms but it feels smoother by far than Skype ever did on any OpSys.
thanks enorbet...
Well, as security os concerned, yes, google is...iffy...at best, still, as long as you dont do anything in front of the webcam you'd not do in public, I think it's pretty safe
Opened my gmail now to try to find the app...
