Angry vncserver in rc.local as other user?

Hi,

When I use the following commands in a bash shell it works but not in rc.local:

su jvdbossc (freshly user)
vncserver -name Earthling -depth 16 -geometry 1024x768

The meaning of this would be to be able to vnc to a user destkop so I can use evolution email (ximian gnome desktop is running in a vnc session when I start the vnc-server)

Red hat 7.3 just stops and says no job control... at boot, after su jvdbossc executes.

Installation method:

* basic install red hat 7.3 with just compiling and basic x, no special tools.
* vmware install
* ximian desktop 2 install
* all released red hat 7.3 updates (but not the kernel and kernel depends)

When I point to another executable file ./emailvnc (batch created with exactly those lines in etc dir) and use the same commands rc.local gets into the emailvnc file but nothing seems to happen exept that it changes to user jvdbossc.

(the vncserver command seems not to be executing. I changed the ./emailvnc with chown jvdbossc emailvnc so permissions should be ok?

nothing seems to work, but i would like to start the desktop as normal user do read mail from other non-linux stations.

I do not understand why it works in a command line like it should be and not in scripting?

Any ideas would be appreciated

txxs

You need to put something like:

su <username> -c vncserver -name Earthling -depth 16 -geometry 1024x768

Thumbs up yes!

This was really close.

The only thing missing is ' around the vncserver part, otherwise it is not well interpreted in a batch file!

With ' around vncserver it works fine!

Regards & txs,
