I've got this website I like to go to, for the last month I've been getting network timeouts.
I figured they just folded, but as it turns out they are fine and it's my access that's boned.
If I take my lappy and unplug it from the network, then use the cell phone for internet I can connect.
so I start digging...
Tried to tracert it from a workstation and got very strange results, so I went right to the firewall W03 w/ ISA04 (connected directly to the modem.) Same odd tracert.
It's clearly getting out, but starts bouncing after it's on Charter's system.
Do any of you know what could be causing something so strange? And why it wouldn't clear up like things normally do when there's network routing problems?
Here's the tracert

well by definition it's conflicting routes to that IP address. if you have no access to those devices you'd need to check with the relevant support people to investigate.
What's interesting is that those first three hops are the same for ANY website I go to. I think the 172 ip is Charter's and they have something fubar in their DNS tables.
I called a charter tech I know and reported it to him, he's also investigating the issue.
I can get to the site fine with a proxy server...so that's a workaround for now.
When I called Charter's support line they said "if you have internet access we will not do anything, it's not our problem".
Well, how about that, it's not what you know, but who you know.
The charter tech I know fed this up the food chain and I just got a call back from someone who agrees.
The problem is that I'm a charter customer and this website is also a charter customer. So the whole trace (my IP, the 10. IP, the 172. IP and 66. IP) is all Charter and they have some internal problem. They say it's a rare problem, but does happen.
They have verified that it IS an internal Charter problem. That it effects MANY Charter customers (the tech wasn't able to get here either.)
If you go out thru another carrier and back in, it works fine, but when it's purely Charter it fails.
They hope to have it resolved in the next couple of days.
I came here to ask a question and instead I have to listen to poeople who hate Americans just because I didn't automatically know that you wouldn't know one of the biggest cable companies in the world.
If you have nothing positive to add to this conversation I respectfully request that you leave your anti-American sentiment elsewhere.
If you own this forum, feel free to delete my account and this thread, if you don't own the place, piss off.
I don't hate America, it's a great place, that's a real stupid thing to say. I just said I had not heard of an American cable internet provider, and why should I have? I've spent 5 weeks of my life in America, 27 years of it in the UK. You certainly appeared to be mocking me for not knowing who they were, which I can assure is not appreciated. I think you merely forgot this is a global website, not just used by Americans.
But anyway, back to the problem methinks...
