Using scp to copy files between servers.

Hello everyone.

I am trying to copy files from my old virtual server to my new dedicated server. I have ssh. So I want to SSH to my new server, drill down to the directory I want to put the files in, then scp over to the new server and pull the files over to the new one.

What exact command do I need to do? Do I need to tar the files first on the old sever?

I have searched these forms, and found nothing that would help answer this question. I apologize if this is an easy answer. I am unsure of what to do at the moment and appreciate any help.
