users are not able to login at all

suddenly my gentoo linux stopped accepting users to login. I get the error message

Code:

# su - mikael
Unable to cd to "/home/mikael" 

# su mikael
Cannot execute /bin/bash: Permission denied

and it is the same for all newly created users as well as the existing ones.

/etc/passwd is fine, and here is some info

(from /etc/passwd): mikael:x:1000:100::/home/mikael:/bin/bash

and this problem appeared like "out of nowhere".

file corruption? unstable system packages (gentoo baselayout, sysvinit, bash)?

can I solve this somehow without re-installing the whole system?

"Permission denied" problems are sometimes hard to solve, because the problem file is not necessarily the one mentioned in the error message. In this case, check the dynamic linker (/lib/ld-2.3.?.so). It should have permissions -rwxr-xr-x.
