first of all: give more details. what scanning program, what scanner...

this is obviously because normal users dont have access to the scanning device.
chmod a+rw /dev/scanner should do

its a "Microtek ScanMaker 3600". i downloaded a tar file, compiled it and put it as /usr/bin/scan with all the right readwrite permissions. and there is no /dev/scanner. i got the program from http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdev.php?id=688

NOTE: it works just fine with the device when i am logged into root
[root@localhost root]scan>'/root/Desktop/picture'

when you plug the scanner in(or the usb subsystem comes up) the usb subsystem will report the device file that shellcode was talking about to syslog. something like this:

Quote:
from website
Jan 12 16:19:21 buffy /sbin/hotplug: arguments (usb) env (PWD=/etc/hotplug HOSTNAME=buffy DEVICE=/proc/bus/usb/001/003 etc...
that device is the device you need to change the permissions of. that can be done by a script but id rather not write one as red hat style distributions dont like me and anything i write is bound to blow up your computer.
