Upgrading to RAID w/o formatting the partition

Here's the scenario: I have a Debian Woody installation with a single disk (root and swap partitions) and I would like to add a second disk in a RAID-1 configuration (software based).

I've found most the information that I needed in the RAID HOWTO, but I couldn't figure out how to get away without formatting the new RAID partition.

I don't have a place to back-up the whole partition i I was wondering if there's some way to keep the data from the underlying partition. Any ideeas?

Thanks,

Bogdan Calmac.
