upgrading distributions

I was just wondering what was the point of upgrading your distribution. I just upgraded mandrake 9.2 to 10.0 and I'm downgrading back. Don't like 10.0. Anyway, I'm new to linux but I think that old OS's will run new proggies. Is that true? And pretty much any linux program will run on any distribution, right? well, if those two things are true, shouldn't you just find a distribution and version you like and stick with it?

Programs have never verisions and if you'd like to have them after some time you'd need to upgrade libraries and other programs...So if you aren't afraid in compiling from source, you can stick with any version you like. But if you depend on RPMs, newer version is a good idea, because you won't have RPMs of new programs for old distribution version.
