Recently, I've downloaded the kernel v.2.4.10.
I intend to install it but ... could you tell me what version of gcc should I use?
Thanks
PS: I am using RH 7.0 w/ kernel 2.2.16 and gcc 2.96, but I have gcc 3.0 (uninstalled), too
last time i checked, the kernel and gcc developers were still ironing out some bugs in gcc 3.0 - kernel compiling is usually where very obscure bugs will come out - but the gcc 2.96 version worked fine.
10 days since my post (too long time). anyway ...
this weekend I WILL INSTALL the new kernel.
and I have two more questions:
1. what d'you think about this http://www.namesys.com/download.html , and
2. I've got the patch (patches) for gcc-2.96 bugs. should I install it (them), too?
apply the gcc patches first - the redhat 7.0 gcc had a few problems. (i should have noticed that the first time you posted) i don't know whether 3.x will work yet - it might. they've been working on the bugs for a while now. i'd stick with the patched 2.96 or go back to 2.95 for kernel compiling.
you'll need to update your modutils and the ppp package too - since you're upgrading from a 2.2 kernel. the older modutils and ppp won't work with a 2.4 kernel.
