Unlock root Dektop folder through Live-CD

I'm always experimenting with Linux and open source software. whenever I get myself in trouble (ie. trouble booting linux) I would usually use a Live-cd to transfer my files to another partion and then reinstall linux. Most of the live-cds now lock the root Desktop of root and sometimes normal users. So now I can't retrieve my files, on my computer from an older linux install. Is there a way to unlock the root Desktop with a live-cd ?

Have you tried knoppix? Have you tried just using "su" in whichever liveCD you're using? Or is this just an issue of not knowing/not wanting to use the console commands?
