unable to change color scheme on scite editor

Hello!.. I've been trying to change the color scheme for Scite text editor on ubuntu, but I'm having a difficult time. I've found post indicating to edit the global properties file SciTEGlobal.properties and change these settings
Code:
selection.fore
selection.back
by default selection.black on that file is set to #000000, which is black background, but somehow it is not taking effect. Unless, I'm interpreting wrong.. I would like to change it to other color scheme, the current one, has a white background and it's hard to stare at it for a while.. Also, there seems to be this theme file, from the developer site; however, when following the instructions somehow it doesn't work. I think the instructions are for windows OS.
