UMASK, ACL or not possible?

Hi All,

Not sure if this question should be posted here or under security.

I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 on a Compaq Presario R3000. I have created a new group called "common". Both me and another user are members of this group. A directory called the same in located in /media/common. From my understanding, files created in here can be accessed by anyone within the same group so long as the owner has created the file with the proper permissions, right? Is this where UMASK or ACL fit in? I would like, only in this particular directory, all file created to have rwxrwx--- permissions. Am I able to restrict UMASK or ACL to one directory or is this possible to do?

Thanks,

Please let me know if I have not made myself clear in my explanation and question.

Hi.

I'm haven't used ACLs very much, but this is my understanding of it:

You can use ACL to define a default ACL for a spesific directory. This default ACL is inherited by all files and folders created under it.
The created subfolders also inherit the default ACL definition itself, so that even files in these subfolders inherit the ACL.
