Question Udf Cd Rw

Other than recompiling the kernel with the UDF reading option, is there any other program/driver that can read CD RW written with InCD ?

Also what is it that is dangerous about UDF rading capability? I seem to have read somewhere that it was.

I think most programs would use the kernel drivers anyways. So you'll have to enable it. If your in luck it could be available as a module and an insmod would be enough. Once you got that working you should be able to just mount the cd and access it like you would for any other filesystem.

You can find the UDF toolset here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/linux-udf

But you will still have to have udf filesystem support in the kernel to use those.

I don't know what you mean by UDF rading. But UDF has been chosen to be used as the file system for 2nd generation high capacity cd's like DVD's. So I assume it's an improvement to the ISO9660.

If you've compiled UDF file support into the kernel, there should be nothing else you need to do to read. As said, just mount it and go. if you want to write to it, look into the above link and you may have to add a line into your lilo.conf (if that's your bootloader) in the form of append="ide-scsi" I believe.

Thnx

I haven't yet added the UDF support to the kernel , but I will try , and thanks for the link.

'rading' (above) was a typo, sorry . . . it's just that someone on this site said that UDF support was not built in by default , because it was 'dangerous' .. or something along those lines.

In older kernels (I checked 2.2.17) it's was marked Experimental if that's what you mean with dangerous. I checked a newer kernel 2.4.16 and there it wasn't marked Experimental anymore so I guess it's pretty safe to use.
Marking things as Experimental usually means they haven't fully tested it yet. Ext3 filesystem is still marked as experimental in the kernel yet Redhat still uses it as the default filesystem. So experimental wouldn't always mean it's dangerous to use.
