Ubuntu Unity and old computers

I tried out Ubuntu Alpha 1 on my netbook and liked the new interface; auto-hiding Unity is great and having everything in one panel looks nice (a good use of space).

I went to put it on an old laptop to see how it looked on a bigger screen but it said I didn't have 3D support. It's strange as both my netbook and laptop use the Intel video driver, so is it the hardware that's incompatible? (Asus Eee 1001P and Acer TravelMate 290)

Is there any way around this or am I stuck using the standard GNOME interface on old computers? I assume Ubuntu will continue to keep this "safe" GNOME session and not say "you cannot run Ubuntu as your computer is not new enough" once it is released? It would be nice if they were to create a 2D version; a less fancy Unity menu.

Without 3D capability, default is to fall back on the old 2D interface
