Two operating systems are missing

I am running openSuSE 10.2 and it works fine.
I have Windows XP, Fedora Core7 and Mandriva 2007 is also on the system.

When the computer starts, I can select an operating system.
There is a menu; it is GRUB. The default operating system is
openSuSE 10.2. However, I always select openSuSE 10.2 because all my work and bookmarks are on opneSuSE 10.2.

Though I rarely look at Fedora Core and Mandriva, they work fine. I can go to the Internet using Fedora Core and Mandriva.

This morning when the computer starts, the menu has been pruned.
The menu contains only openSuSE 10.2 and Windows XP. Yesterday it worked fine. I had all the operating systems on the menu.

Something has gone astray. How can I fix the problem?
I must get back the menu which contains all the operating systems.

Please advice me on this.

I have 3 hard drives inside the computer.

The first hard drive is 'hda'
It has all operating systems.

The second one is 'hdb'.
It is empty. I inserted it nearly 3 weeks
ago.

The third one is 'hdc'.
It is the CD-ROM drive.

The fourth one is 'hdd'.
It is empty too.

Almost 3 weeks ago I removed an old
non-functioning Maxtor hard drive(hdb) and
installed a new one. Everything worked
smoothly until yesterday.

................................................................
[I found the following files in the grub folder.]

linux-3vxw:/boot/grub # ls

device.map

ffs_stage1_5

menu.lst.old

stage2

device.map.old

iso9660_stage1_5

minix_stage1_5

ufs2_stage1_5

e2fs_stage1_5

jfs_stage1_5

reiserfs_stage1_5

vstafs_stage1_5

fat_stage1_5

menu.lst

stage1

xfs_stage1_5

linux-3vxw:/boot/grub #

There are a couple of different ways to fix your problem and this article explains both.

http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showt...hreadid=147959

PS : I forgot to mention the reason you lost the two was probably do to an upgrade of your Suse. If you set your boot up as this article suggests this should not happen again.

In the grub folder are two files you should look at, they are "menu.lst" and "menu.lst.old", the "old" one probably has them all, the newer one probably has some trimmed off.
If this is the case, add (copy and paste) the missing entries from the old to the new, the new "menu.lst" should be used as it may refer to a newer kernel or something.

I thank both Lary Webb and Junior Hacker for taking time to reply me.

Junior's guess is correct. When I look at the 'menu.ist' file, those entries are missing. Very strange. I didn't touch those files for more than 8 months. It has got pruned without my knowledge.

The file 'menu.ist.old' has all the entries.

I will try your suggestion as soon as time permits. I got to attend some urgent things on my computer. The computer works; so I can do all my work.

How on earth these things take place!

For some reason I did reboot the computer pressing the key combination 'Ctrl + Alt + Delete'. I did this yesterday.
I repeated this a couple of times. As you know you could do this when starting the computer.
I don't recall why I did this. This may have pruned the file.

I will come back and beg your help when necessary. So please keep a good watch on this thread.

Thanks everybody.
Now it is working; all the operating systems are on the menu.
There is another problem.
I have a cable modem. I mean my ISP provides the Internet via a cable modem.

If I go to Mandriva Linux or Fedora Core Linux and browsed the Internet, I have to restart the modem to come back to the openSuSE 10.2 side.

I always go to the Internet on the openSuSE 10.2 side. Everything works fine with openSuSE 10.2.

I can go to Mandriva Linux and browsed the Internet. for example.
When I come back to the openSuSE 10.2, I can't go to the Internet.
I have to shut down the modem for about 5 minutes and restart.
Do yo know how to solve this problem. This is a nuisance.

Get a broadband router, and put it between your DSL modem and the PC.. that problem should disappear.

I thank Farslayer and Drakeo for the replies.
As a matter of fact I have a broadband router which I bought nearly 6 months ago. I didn't open it. I didn't find time to open it.
Always there are other things to do. I bought it to make small network.

I feel guilty that I didn't open it as yet.

D-Link Ethernet Broadband Router.
Model: D1-604

---------------------------------------------
I am working and studying. On top of that I must train 3 times a week at the gym.
Time is my biggest enemy.

I have difficulty in understanding Drakeo's answer.
In the ' menu.lst ' file , you find all the operating systems.
As it recognizes all the operating systems, I can go to openSuSE , Mandriva or Fedora Core.

How do I write kernels on that file?

when Grub starts it looks for the menu.1st file it is in your /boot/grub/ folder so when you use your gui grub LOL configure it adds the entries to the menu.1st so when grub starts you see all your O/S's you are actually looking at the menu.1st file in grub. hope that helps.
or you can just open the file and make your own entries if you know what your doing.

Thanks Drakeo
I don't know how to do this. It seems my knowledge of Linux is insufficient to do this though I am familiar with GRUB configurations. I can add a new Linux for the 'menu.lst' . I hope to install Ubuntu when time permits.

What is Grub LOL?
