Truetype Fonts on Linux

Hey. For the past few weeks i've been trying to install windows fonts on my OS, CentOS 4.2. I have the fonts, and they are installed on linux. However, I can't get them to look 'nice.' I've read a lot of tutorials on how to make the text in linux look like windows but they hasn't helped me. That is basicly my goal, to make the text in linux look like windows. Most of the tutorials I have been reading are also a bit out-dated. I've tried also instaling freetype and configuring it but it hasnt worked for me.

Do you have a fontserver like XFS installed? This is mostly the easiest way to get fonts displayed properly in X.
