things to do before installing ubuntu

hye guys was up, i am very interested in switching from vista over to linux, but i am just a bit hesitant about doing so. I was wondering if there is anything that I should know before hand, or have before hand, before I actually make the switch. Thank you.

1. Understand partitions a bit. You need a root partition mounted at / (10 GB ++ preferably) and a swap partition (~ twice your RAM size). You can have more partitions.

2. You can check your hardware with a live cd too

3. The 'Alternative' install CD will be better. You may like Kubuntu instead

4. See tutorials at LQ and the *buntu site

Not to rain on the parade, but definitely read as much about it in advance. In particular you might like to look at the threads:

In fact, you might want to search under "ported Linux programs" in this forum and look at some of the other threads. You'll be disappointed or might want to dual boot if there's some hardware or software you can't live without or use often that doesn't work or requires extra effort.
