I hadn't known the gpasswd tool until just now, and I still don't know what it's supposed to do. But that ...

Code:
New Password:
Re-enter new password:
gpasswd:salt.c:175:gensalt:Assertion'salt_size>=8&&salt_size<=16' failed.
Aborted
... looks like a problem inside gpasswd's hash function. It may have to do with the length of the password, but that's just a wild guess.

You mean Fedora 9?
I hope that's just a typing mistake and you mean in fact Fedora 19, because Fedora 9 is dead as a dodo, it was dismissed five years ago.

you might want to READ the man page
Code:
man gpasswd
there is NO gui
it is a terminal program , you NEED to include options

Code:
gpasswd -a bob users
and if this IS fedora 9
it is 11 versions out of date
the current is fedora 20

My os is actaully fedora 9 !Because my computer is rather old and i have to install a low-level os.

I also try to restrict my password according to the message "8<passord<16".

Perhaps you are right, i don't ask the right question ,but i really don't understand the problem

fedora 9 is MISSING the last 5 YEARS of security FIXES
it is wide open to EVERY KNOWN AND FIXED SECURITY HOLE
-- DO NOT USE !!!!! ---

if you need o OS that is supported and on OLD very low resource hardware
the free CentOS 5.10 will run very well on 512 meg of ram
and 5.10 has 4 years of support left

or
Centos 6.5 using xfce desktop will run on 512 meg of ram

it is NEVER a good idea to use a unsupported operating system
it is like trying to use Win95 or 98 TODAY .

perhaps i should explain my reason. currently i just use the os to learn the LINUX,because i live in china
and the fedora is popular here and there are mang formus and websites about fedora that i can turn to for help.In fact, my english is very poor and it is hard for me to understand the mannual sometimes

so i chose the fedora 9,just for learnning.

thanks for your help and alertion

all the antique software for 9 is no longer on the web
yum is 100% useless , you might as well uninstall yum
you will almost NEVER be able to use it .
there are only 10 mirrors( out of a few hundred) that have the old fedora 9 rpm's
and those are the install cd software from 2008
http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/arch...6/os/Packages/

there is NOTHING to install on fedora 9
you have to use Firefox 3 ( yes 3 !!!!)
PS firefox 30 is the current
the version of firefox in fedora 9 is 27 VERSIONS OUT OF DATE

install the FREE
CentOS 5.10 or 6.5
they are supported and will run on older hardware

Back to the original question...

The "gpasswd" does NOT have anything to do with passwords. It lets you add and remove users to groups.

EDIT: nope, I'm wrong, see below

I am afraid that you are wrong !

The "gpasswd" can set passwords for a group !

The method is "gpasswd groupname"

I stand corrected... I had only used it to add users to groups... apparently I still have a lot of learning to do!
