This might help: https://osxdaily.com/2014/03/12/send...-command-line/

I haven't tested it, but I did check and the website it refers to is still alive.

Also, if you have Airdroid installed on your cell phone, you can use Airdroid on your computer to send and read texts via your cell. You do not need an Airdroid account to use the service locally.

I've done this with a few methods.
  • Old Nokia phone cabled to a PC and using Gnokii.
  • Same as above but using a "proper" SMS modem device like http://www.smsco.it/tomcat/en/modem/cinterion_mc55i.jsp
  • Most recently I've "outsourced" the delivery. Clickatell and Twilio offer SMS via an HTTPS endpoint, it becomes trivial to write a bash script to send an SMS via the command line.

Things I've not tried but want to now!!
  • "Mobile Broadband" USB stick
  • RaspberryPi with a GSM "hat"
