System won't reboot

I just recently installed Debian Sarge on a new system with a P4S800D-X motherboard and everything is working great, except I can't reboot the computer. For some reason I am able to shutdown my computer with no problem but on reboot it just hangs.

I tried compiling the "reboot fixups" into the kernel (2.6.15.5) but that just adds the message "No reboot fixup found for your hardware". I also have ACPI and APM compiled into the kernel.

I've read through a bunch of other threads from people with similar problems, but none of the solutions seem to work for my situation. Any suggestions??

So your problem is :

you only have a problem when you reboot Debian but shutdown works well .

this problem happened to me once i downloaded a red hat version 9.0
into a server , the server began to hang when i run two programs at once and when i want to shut it down it stops like someone put it in the freezer .

i solved this problem by running another linux distribution called Mandrake 9.1 . and removing any operating systems in the hard drive .

give me more details about your computer . maybe Debian can't run very well under it .

Yes, that's exactly the problem. Unfortunately switching this system to Mandrake isn't an option right now, I know Debian much better than any other distribution and don't have a lot of time to learn the ropes on a new system.

Here is all the information I can think of:

'uname -a' returns:

I included the next few because I suspect apm or acpi to be responsible

leave all the information a side

1- some people have bigger problems than you .

2- Does Debian run slow on your system try opening programs at once .

3- i can't do much because knowning the problem is not like seeing it .

4- when you want to reboot ----> go to linux conf sometimes it give me error Messages .

5- download a lower version of Debian distribution .

i will try to find a solution for your problem hope i can do it fast .

Unhappy

1. I understand first hand that people have bigger problems than this, but it is none the less a big problem for me. I've been running Linux (mostly Debian and RedHat) for over three years now, so I've seen a LOT of different types of problems. This one just seems particularly stubborn.

2. Debian runs great with anything I through at it, and always has. The only symptom I've noticed on this machine is the failure to reboot.

3. Yes, it is very different when your trying to fix a problem when you can't just sit there and hack at it. You really have to know your stuff well to be helpful in most situations. I appreciate any effort though.

4. I'm not sure what you mean when you say Linux conf, did you mean the console? In either case, there are no visible errors appearing on the console and nothing in /var/log/messages,syslog, or kernlog that would indicate a problem.

5. I'm fairly convinced that it's either a BIOS error, or a kernel config error. Installing an older version of Debian may work, but really isn't an option right now. This system must remain operational while the problem is fixed. Reinstalling Debian and updating all the packages would take a least a full day. Then rediscovering and reconfiguring all the bugs/issues after that would take almost another day. Unfortunately that's just not possible.
