System going unresponsive every few hours

Hi,

Recently (yesterday), a problem has started with my Gentoo 2.6.10 system.

Every few hours, the system will just go completely unresponsive and the hard disk light will stay on almost permanently. The decrease in responsiveness will be gradual; if I'm quick, I can kill X and regain control of my system, if not, I have to hard reset. I haven't made any system changes recently and my system has been working fine for months up until yesterday.

I checked my syslog, and there are some very weird messages. For example, this happened this afternoon:

i had a similar problem a few months ago... it turned out to be a dying hard disk...

You should do a full data backup now, just to be safe. Then start an incremental backup system from now on, in case your disk dies out of the blue. Hope it doesnt, but I lost a hard disk lately (unrelated problem) and it certainly sucked having an old backup when it died.

Same cable and HDD controller for both disks that went bad?
I'd look into the other IDE/ATA components before (possibly) sacrificing another hard disk, if this turns out to be a dead/dying hdd.
Also check into turning on any smartdisk monitoring utilities your HDD may support, to verify that bad disk perfromance is the cause, and not an effect of another hardware failure

The syslog indicates that you are running out of memory. Can you tell us how big the swap partition and physical memory is. The hd light being on seems to confirm the kill process going on and the freeing up of swap space. It may also be caused by poor memory (test with MemTest86);
