Uhm.... It really depends on what you are going to be using the system for... You hear mention of setting the swap to three times your physical memory, but this always seems to be aimed at server type installations. On your system I'd probably use something like 128MB or possibly 256MB of swap, but that just for my use. I've got a box here with 256MB of physical that has no swap because I never need it, there may be others on the board that have 1GB of physical and still find their machines need a lot of swap.

I'd suggest you use your machine in its 'normal' way and keep and eye of the output from free, top and/or gtop to see how much memory you are actually using. When you look at free remember to subtract the buffer and cache usage from the physical memory usage, otherwise you'll think you're using all your RAM!

HTH

Jamie...

well, 200mb would easily be enough. if you've got 20gb to play with, maybe 300. but then a mail server and web server etc.. really take up hardly any space. it's how much they're used that will affect the amount of memory required. my apache gets about 4 hits a week i'd say.. not exactly intensive! and that machine is a p200 64mb, and does a fine job.
