Bit of a problem with Suse this one, I am using kernel 2.4.18, duron pro, biostar M7VKD MB, 128 Mb Ram, Maxtor 30g hdd. The system runs Ok and is generally stable with the very odd lock up. This all changes when I try to compile a kernel, if I am patient it will do it, after it has frozen several times, hard disk complaints and errors on reboot with numerous errors it feels the need to put right, it will get there. Right at this moment it will not, no matter what I do, various tweaks in the BIOS, slow the hdd mode down to PIO1, using hd parm.
I have read various bad things about the VIA KT133a chipset this board uses, have I made a dud with this system or does any body have any good ideas to try, what little hair I have I am now ripping out, I have got the system how I want but if I want to play with the kernel I can't. Invaribly if I get the kernel to build the module build is impossible.......help....................
Just out of curiosity (or rather disbelief :} ... can't imagine
gcc crashing your LINUX) ... what happens if any other
application causes lots of hd traffic?
Like in copying /usr/src to /tmp or something like that...
I also find it hard to believe, all my Linux boxes til now have been as good as gold, it may have taken em a while to compile the kernel but they did it. I'll give the drive a good thrashing tonight and post back but I think it'll be OK, certainly when I run the DAT drive it's fine and that gives the HDD some work. I am becoming more convinced that I have an iffy MB.
Cheers for replying.....
Well I have copied the /src directory to /tmp, about 400megs worth and it all moved fine, so the hdd and associated bits seem OK, anyone any thoughts....
Well I have solved the problem, the Biostar M7VKD went back to the supplier today and changed to an ASUS A7A266E and all is well, just like I know and I love linux, 100% and rock solid stable.
I just got 7.3 and it would not install from my new cdr on my kt133a chipset system. It did install from images that i wrote to the hard drive.
Also this same set of cdrs did install on a sis 735 system.
As far as compiling is concerned. I have compiled sucessfully on a kt133a. It did take a while. Error message happen during compiling but in the end what I compiled works.
